About ME
My name is Weila, and my nickname is Mafalda.
I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker with standard pronunciation.
As a child growing up with a father who is a linguist speaks 5 foreign languages and worked as a translator, I was taught English at age 4, Japanese at age 10. When I was in Shanghai, as a young adult, I worked as a Chinese tutor for expats for almost 2 years. Then, I moved to Europe at age 26. In Belgium, I studied French and completed my MS in Marketing. Afterward, I moved to New York with my husband and lived there for about 4 years. I also spent 2 years in Rome and studied Italian language, history, and culture.
Since 2016, I have been living in the DC area and continue exploring new languages such as Farsi and Arabic. I have been tutoring college students, adults, and kids since then. Until now, I have more than 300 hours of tutoring experiences with English speaking students.

What will happen at our initial meeting?
I offer a free assessment to understand your current level, then, we will discuss your goals, strategy and plan. You should bring your textbook, and anything related to Chinese learning. At the end, I will leave you a tutoring agreement. After confirming our tutoring relationship, I will make a course description based on your individual needs/goals.
What are your teaching methods and teaching tools ?
I use various tools for students of different level and different learning styles.
In general, I want my students to have fun while learning.
Below are some of the teaching tools I will be using:
LOCI ( an ancient method helps with memory) + Memorise( an app helps to build up vocabulary) + Chieasy (recognizing the Chinese characters)+ Coaching( a method works for medium and advanced level) + Personal Interest ( a method works especially for creative students)
I usually work and my kids go to school, when can we meet for tutoring sessions?
I work from Monday to Friday 9am-8 pm. Saturday 9am-5 pm.
